In a move that caught high school football fans by surprise, Cairo head football coach Steve DeVoursney announced on Thursday that he was stepping down from his position with the Syrupmakers.
In an interview with ITG Next Georgia, DeVoursney said he has been exploring coaching opportunities in states other than Georgia and that one of those opportunities has presented itself.
“I’ve been looking at a few opportunities, and I’m not getting any younger,” DeVoursney said. “One of these opportunities has potentially come available, so [Friday, June 3] is my last day.”
While DeVoursney did not want to disclose the specific schools he is considering, he did tell us there are three potential options in Alabama.
“One of the schools I’ve been talking to wants to talk to me on Monday about a coaching vacancy, so I’m going to go meet with them,” he said.
If DeVoursney does land a coaching job in Alabama, it will be the latest in a trend of coaches swapping jobs between Alabama and Georgia. Recently, Jamey DuBose left Lowndes to take a head coaching job at Orange Beach High School, located just outside of Mobile. Then, there was Hoover head football coach Josh Niblett leaving for the Gainesville High head coaching position. Tom Causey, who had coached at Pelham (AL) High School, left his post to take the Ola High School head football job in McDonough, GA.
DeVoursney denied that recent administration changes at Cairo High, including former head baseball coach Chad Parkerson being named as the new athletic director, were related to his decision to leave.
“Absolutely not,” he said. “That had nothing to with me. I would have enjoyed working with him,” DeVoursney said of Parkerson.
DeVoursney has served as the Cairo head football coach for the past seven seasons, leading the Syrupmakers to a 38-19 overall record.
“I will miss it,” DeVoursney said. “It’s the best job I’ve ever had, but I need to go take care of me and my family. You have to go when opportunities calls.”
