Vikings Football Coach Will Take Over Young Program in Orange Beach, Alabama

In an exclusive interview with ITG Next, Lowndes head football coach Jamey DuBose said family is the main reason he has accepted a new coaching opportunity in Alabama.

In an emotional mid-morning meeting with his players and coaches on March 31, Dubose announced that he was stepping down. Dubose will take over as head coach at Orange Beach High School, a Class 4A institution located on the Gulf Coast about an hour south of Mobile.

“I made a promise to my father [that] I would take care of Mom if something ever happened to him, so I will fulfill what my dad wanted,” said Dubose, whose father recently passed away.

Dubose also said cited time demands as a reason for leaving.

“The Lowndes job is a great job, but it is demanding of time, and I was afraid I could not continue to give the time that it needed to do it right,” he said. “I have an opportunity close to my parents’ home and close to my mom’s doctors.”

That opportunity will be guiding the Orange Beach Makos in just their third season of football competition.

“They are a new classification 4A school,” Dubose said. “They have about 40 players right now.”

The Makos finished 3-6 in their inaugural season, then went 9-2 and secured their first-ever playoff spot in 2021.

DuBose leaves Lowndes County after two successful seasons as head coach. He took the Vikings to the GHSA Class 7A semifinals each season, winning 10 games each year. His Vikings were region champions in 2021, finishing a perfect 3-0 in league play. His first season saw Lowndes finish as the No. 2 seed with a 2-1 record.

Despite the great run, Dubose said he wishes his team could have reached the ultimate prize of a state championship.

“I hate that my time was cut short and that we didn’t reach what we set out to do, but God gave me a different play to run,” he said.

The Lowndes County school system has posted the position of head football coach on its website at: https://lhs.lowndes.k12.ga.us.
