It’s Christmas Eve 2018 in the Covington home. The family is celebrating the Christmas holidays, just like many other families. Rian Covington, a junior at Atlantic Coast High School, is a gifted swimmer for not only the Stingrays but also the Bolles School Sharks. He has competed in several events over the past year and is enjoying a few days of downtime with friends and family.
Then, the phone rings, and it’s not the news a family wants to receive, especially at this time of year, when the mood is festive and joyous. The family learns that a lump Covington had discovered on the side of his neck months earlier is cancerous. They go from gathering around the Christmas tree with joy and cheer to gathering as a family to figure out the best way to deal with the sudden and devastating news.
