Key Losses
For what was one of the state’s top defenses a year ago, some of the biggest losses for the Blue Darters come on that side of the ball, headlined by the trio of Travion Barnes, Josiah Robinson, and Nikai Martinez. Apopka also has to replace two key pass rushers in Michael Spain and Yamir Betancourt, as well as other defenders including Andre Phillips, Kavion Nichols, and Troy Lea.
Offensively, the biggest loss for the Blue Darters comes from running back Keyondray Jones, who transferred to Ocoee. Quarterback Andrew McClain and Quincy Frazier, who was a key contributor in both the running and receiving game, have graduated. Frazier accounted for over 10 total touchdowns a year ago, and will be missed in particular as a receiver. Keandre Brown also has moved on from that position.
Who’s Back
Led by edge rusher Kaven Call, the Blue Darters’ defense will again be a strength in 2022. Apopka also expects Malik Nicholson, Kevin Roberts, Antwone Robinson, Jordan Wright, and Rashad Watson to play key roles this season.
On offense, rising senior Kaleb Hicks returns at quarterback after seeing limited action a year ago. The biggest offensive returnee is tight end Antonio Ferguson, one of Florida’s top players at the position. Another key returning player is running back Zeldrick Roberts, one of the Blue Darters’ top rushers a year ago.
What to Expect
Apopka, one of the state’s top teams among all classifications in 2021, went on an exciting postseason run to reach the Class 8A state title game. Led by their defense, the Blue Darters now must replace some key names on that side of the ball, but the pieces appear to be in place for another strong defensive unit.
Overall, expect yet another strong season from Apopka in 2022, and for the Blue Darters to be in the mix to compete for another state championship game appearance this year.
Prediction
Apopka will win at least eight games and put itself in state title contention.
