This season has been historical for Alabama high school girls wrestling. The AHSAA agreed to sanction three tournaments strictly for girls in the 2020 season.
The move has proven positive, as many girls such as Carly Thomas from Bob Jones High, Kathryn Alvis from Oak Mountain High and Brynleigh Glover from Thompson High have been successful.
The first-ever sanctioned tournament took place on Dec. 4 at W.S. Neal High School.
Before the 2020 season, girls were allowed on teams, but had to compete against boys. The Alabama High School Girls Wrestling Task Force hopes that this step will lead to the AHSAA sanctioning an entire division devoted to girls wrestling in the future.
