McGill-Toolen High School Cross Country Runner William Porr Named ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month for October 2024
After carrying his stellar start to the season over into September, McGill-Toolen High School cross country runner William Porr has been voted the ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month for October 2024.
Now a winner in back-to-back months, Porr received the honor as a result of his performances in September, with the McGill-Toolen standout receiving 96.12% of the possible votes over three additional finalists. Those three finalists were Elba football player Alvin Henderson, Russellville football player Cameron Phinizee, and Oak Mountain cross country runner John Shoemaker.
In September, Porr was back in action for McGill-Toolen across three different races.
The first came on Sept. 7 in Montevallo for the Early Bird Twilight 2024. McGill-Toolen finished first overall among teams with 69 points. Porr won the 5,000-meter race with a finishing time of 15 minutes,10.74 seconds, which was almost a full minute faster than the second-place finisher and Porr’s fastest finish of the month.
Porr’s next race came a couple weeks later in Mobile, where McGill-Toolen placed first among teams with 51 points in the Puppy Creek Classic 2024. In the 5,000M, Porr placed first once again with a time of 15:56.63, which was also a near minute faster than the second-place finisher.
Porr’s final race of the month came on Sept. 28 in Spanish Fort at the Daphne Invitational at Historic Blakelely State Park 2024. Porr helped lead McGill-Toolen to a third-place team finish with 113 points while also winning the 5,000M overall with a time of 15:32.08, nearly 30 seconds faster than the second-place finisher.
These times only continued what has been a strong start to the year for Porr, who also won two races back in August to begin the cross country season. Will Porr continue his strong season into October and November as well?
