Glenwood Basketball Player Jasmyn Burts Voted ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month
When taking a broad look at high school girls basketball programs across the state of Alabama in recent years, there are few teams who have had more combined success than the Glenwood Gators.
A program that has won multiple state championships across the past couple of years, the Gators entered the month of February as one of the top teams in their classification once again, and with a strong chance to go back-to-back in AISA Class 3A. As you likely know by now as well, the Gators did just that, topping Tuscaloosa Academy 58-56 to claim their second consecutive state championship in as many years.
A big reason for this? Senior guard Jasmyn Burts, our ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month for February, who received 34.58 percent of the votes.
When watching a Glenwood game at any point this season, you don’t have to watch for very long to tell the impact that Burts had on this 2021-22 Gators team.
When asked about the impact that Burts can have on a game, Glenwood girls head basketball coach Dusty Perdue stated, “Her style of play is pressure defense on the ball at all times, and her athletic ability takes over to turn into offense. She probably is the best defensive player to ever play at Glenwood. The way she can handle the ball with both hands and get to the rim is fun to watch.”
When taking a look at Burts’ month of February in particular however, the senior’s impact over the season’s final month was more than her 26-point performance in the state title game.
“The state tournament this year is where she decided that she would make an extra effort to carry the team to a championship,” Perdue states of Burts. “When the competition gets better is when Jasmyn gets better. She was phenomenal all year, but especially during the state tournament. The girls call her the Queen of the Court, aka as “Jazzball.”
Coming to Glenwood her junior year from Central-Phenix City where she was the MVP of the area, Burts has certainly left a massive impact on the Glenwood girls basketball program during her two seasons with the Gators.
“Her impact on our program on the court has been unbelievable since the summer she came in,” Perdue stated. “We knew the player she was and we just fed off of her. Off the court she is an exceptional student-athlete that fits our school very well. She leads by example, and tries to be better in life every day.”
An impactful piece of the Glenwood girls basketball program both on-and-off the court, whose time in a Gators uniform culminated with a phenomenal February and a state championship. Congrats to Glenwood’s Jasmyn Burts, our ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month.
