Most Impressive Georgia High School Football Records
There’s a difference between skill and production. However, it takes both to have a truly record-breaking season or career. In 2020, Rabun County wide receiver Adriel Clark set a state record with 28 receiving touchdowns, surpassing Demarco Robinson’s previous record of 27 at ML King. This prompted me to dive through the archives of the Georgia High School Football Historians Association website, where there is a plethora of records dating back prior to the Second World War. Of them all, here are the ones I found to be the most impressive Georgia high school football records.
Career Rushing Yards Leader (Commerce RB Monte Williams – 8,844 yards): From 1997 to 2000, the Tigers’ running back averaged 2,211 rushing yards per year, a stunning mark. In his four years, he led Commerce to four region titles and even the Class A championship, where he ran over Buford for a 27-19 victory. His record will likely remain intact, as Washaun Ealey in second place has 700 yards less than him.
Career Passing Yards Leader (Cartersville QB Trevor Lawrence – 13,902 yards): This one is expected. Lawrence turned heads with his performances through four years with the Canes, and that will be reflected as he’ll likely be picked first overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He dominated in this category, racking up around 800 yards more than Deshaun Watson in second place.
Career Field Goals Leader (Colquitt County K Ryan Fitzgerald – 51 field goals made): Fitzgerald was simply outstanding. By 2018, he was recognized nationwide and committed to Florida State, a college prized for its special teams players. What makes this record impressive? He made all 51 field goals in only three seasons, as opposed to most others on the list who made use of all four.
Total Scoring Offense Leaders (2017 Rome – 758 points): It’s not uncommon for lower classification teams to average over 40 points a game. But for a 6A program to average 50.5 PPG? Stunning. The 2017 Rome Wolves scored at least 33 points in every game and topped the 50-point mark seven times during the season. The Wolves defeated Buford in the semifinals by 38, and demolished Warner Robins in the state championship by the same margin. The defense shouldn’t be forgotten, as they pitched six shutouts and allowed no team to score more than 13 points against them in the playoffs.
Career Rushing Touchdowns Leader (Emanuel County Institute RB Washaun Ealey – 133 touchdowns): Ealey’s career is likely one of the top three all-time by a running back in Georgia. With him in the backfield, Emanuel County scored 21 or less points only six times in four years. In 2007, his sophomore year, he smashed the record books by scoring 58 touchdowns in one season. No one comes close to either of his marks, with second place in both categories being currently held by Keaton Mitchell of ELCA. Consider these records as unmatchable and unbeatable.
