Last season was a big improvement for Head Coach Karl Smeltzer and the Middleburg Broncos. The Broncos went 4-6 last season and qualified for the playoffs for the first time in 13 seasons. This year was much better than last year’s winless season.
Middleburg’s offense has a bit of a relook now that they lost their star running back Rob Lowder, who had just under 1000 yards rushing last year. Taking his place is junior Andrew Thomas. Thomas will be making the position change from free safety to running back this season. The only returning offensive player for the Broncos is senior quarterback Garrett Blanchett. Another key returner is linebacker Kodi Carrington, who had 107 total tackles last season.
“We are excited for the upcoming season and we know the expectation is playoffs now,” said Smeltzer. The head coach expands on their team and how they run a pro-style offense, which compared to most teams they face have spread offense. With the seven schools in Clay County, Smeltzer said all the games are important every season.
