As we enter Week 3 of the 2022 Florida high school football season, we see some teams across the state who are off to hot starts. Following is a look at one team from each classification that has impressed with its performance on the field up to this point.
4M: Winter Park
After a 6-5 season a year ago, which resulted in a first-round 8A playoff exit, the Wildcats are off to a 2-0 start to the 2022 season, owning wins over both Lake Nona and North Gwinnett (GA). Winter Park has outscored opponents 73-19 through the first two weeks and now enters an intriguing matchup of Class 4M unbeatens by hosting Boone.
4S: Fleming Island
The Golden Eagles were ousted in the first round of the 7A playoffs a year ago and finished the year with a 6-5 overall record. Fleming Island has started the 2022 campaign at an impressive 2-0 with dominant wins over Clay and Rickards and an offensive output of 40 PPG during that span.
3M: Oviedo
Oviedo was another six-win team a year ago, as the Lions finished the season with a 6-4 overall record, missing the 8A playoffs. The Lions are off to a 2-0 start to the 2022 season, however, owning two notable wins over Lake Brantley and University. Their hot start sets up an intriguing battle of unbeatens this week against Lake Mary at home.
3S: Eau Gallie
As a member of Class 6A, Eau Gallie posted a 3-7 overall record a year ago, missing the playoffs. The Commodores are off to a fast start in 2022, however, with a 2-0 record, and have outscored opponents 110-0 after two dominant wins over Astronaut and Liberty.
2M: Booker T. Washington
The Tornadoes finished the 2021 season with a 5-7 overall record. Despite playing in a deep Class 2M, Booker T. Washington appears well on its way to eclipse that win total this year. Off to a 2-0 start, the Tornadoes have beaten both Killian and Edison so far and are set for a big test this Friday night against Miami Central.
2S: Pensacola Catholic
The Crusaders lost three of their first four games a year ago on their way to a 5-5 season in Class 3A. Pensacola Catholic is off to a 2-0 start to this season with wins over Pryor (OK) and Milton, having outscored those opponents a combined 67-14.
