4 Questions With Dixie County Football Coach LB Cravey
We spoke with Dixie County football coach LB Cravey about his team’s winning tradition and what fans can expect in 2021.
Q: Coach, you have been head coach for just a couple of years, but you’re no stranger to Dixie County. What was it like, after having played there and having been a long time assistant, to finally get your shot at the head coaching position?
A: I’ve grown up around Dixie County football. My dad coached in the early ‘90s. I used to go to the practices and games and fell in love with Dixie County football. I saw the football players as celebrities. I could not wait for my chance to be a Bear. During my playing years I thought, “man, it would a dream come true to one day be able to coach the Bears.” So, when the opportunity came around, I jumped on it. It is very rare for people to get to have their dream job, and that’s what I’m getting to do. From the smell of the grass to the sounds of the sawmill across the street while we practice, I love Dixie County football!
Q: Dixie County is seemingly always in the hunt year after year. Do you feel any pressure to keep that winning tradition going?
A: Winning, being tough and hard hitting has always been the culture here since coach Wilkerson was the head coach. With coaching, there’s always pressure to win, but I have the confidence to continue the tradition because of the mentoring I have had with coach Wilkerson over the years as his assistant. I know, as a coach, what we must do as a team to be successful, and that’s what I will do to the best of my ability.
Q: What’s been the biggest adjustment for you since taking over as the head coach there at Dixie County?
A:The biggest adjustment for me, since taking over, was to maintain a winning tradition, but introduce a new culture under my lead. I have my own style of doing things that I have developed as a coach over the years, and getting people and players to buy in is a lot different from being an assistant.
Q: Speaking of that winning formula there at Dixie County year after year, what’s this year’s team looking like?
A:I am very excited for the team this year. We have a lot of skill and a great class of seniors who will do what it takes to be successful. If they work hard in the offseason and strive to get better every week of the season, we will have a great year.
