There are several stories to tell within the Georgia high school football landscape, both historically and presently. While it’s interesting to relay and relive these moments, a relaxing break is sometimes required. This is one of those pauses. Through my research of football in Georgia, I have stumbled across a number of fun facts and other oddities that I found very interesting. Here are 10 of them:
- Heritage-Newnan has lost 22 consecutive games, yet has made the playoffs twice in two years. This, obviously, is due to a four-team region. Nevertheless, the Hawks may be one of the worst Georgia high school football teams to ever make the playoffs, and it’s reflected in their losing streak.
- Monroe Area is the only school to lose 10 games in one season and follow that up with a 10-win season the following year. In 2008 and 2009, the Purple Hurricanes went 0-20, but managed 11 wins and a quarterfinals berth in 2010.
- In 1967, Thomasville tied in six of their 10 games. Three of those ties featured a 7-7 score. The Bulldogs have only had as many as two ties in every other season, but 1967 featured three times as many draws.
- The last time Osborne won more than three games in a season, Joey Bosa, Ezekiel Elliott and Harrison Butker weren’t born. The Cardinals went 9-2 in 1994, but have failed to make the playoffs since, and have racked up 17 one- or zero-win seasons.
- In 1922, the now-defunct Douglas A&M Demons defeated the Ocilla Terrapins by a score of 144-0. This is the largest recorded blowout in Georgia high school football history. Shockingly, the Demons finished the season with a 3-6 record. In the four games that Ocilla played that season, they were outscored 273 to 6.
- Valdosta won 36 straight games in 1960, 1961 and 1962. Yet, in 1963, they went 2-7-1, the second-worst record to date for the Wildcats. That season also featured the lowest points scored in school history (after 1915).
- Macon County’s K’Hari Lane posted 56 passing touchdowns in 2016, more than Gunner Stockton, Trevor Lawrence or any other Georgia high school quarterback. The Montezuma native threw only two interceptions and rushed for eight more scores on the ground.
- The Washington Street Wildcats scored 100 points in three games, the most of any school ever. In 1966, they defeated Holley by a score of 119-0 and crushed Camilla Consolidated 116-6 two seasons later. In the school’s final season of existence (1969), Washington Street assaulted Washington-Blakely, 126-14.
- Buford failing to win its region is not a promising sign for opposing teams – every time the Wolves have failed to do so since 2001, they have won the state championship. However, Buford has also won 10 titles when they clinched a region championship. Pick your poison.
- Lakeside-DeKalb has the same number of Georgia high school football state titles as Grayson and Blessed Trinity. All three schools have three state championships, with Lakeside’s last coming in 1991.
