Key Losses
The Wolfpack will miss three key defensive players whom second-year head coach Jermaine Wilson described as leaders in 2023. They are cornerback Richard Grooms, who Wilson said was a “vocal leader,” and linebackers Luke Campbell and Colin Maxwell.
“Luke was the heart and soul of the defense, and Colin was too,” Wilson said.
Maxwell also played on offense as a running back and receiver. He signed with Presbyterian College.
Other players not returning for the 2024 season are tight end and running back Nicholas Damone and quarterback Brady Nelson.
“He (Nelson) was so resilient last year for us,” Wilson said.
Who’s Back
Luke Gundersen is one of several players Wilson said will be returning in 2024.
“He’s a little undersized, but he has a heck of a motor,” Wilson said of the senior linebacker.
Keegan Maclean is a returning senior who will once again play defensive end, linebacker, and tight end in 2024.
Two offensive linemen return to give the team an area of strength this year, Wilson said.
“Junior Jeffrey Bruce is a big kid who will play offensive guard and tackle for us,” Wilson said. “He is very aggressive, and junior Denny Laguador is our returning center. The offensive line will be our strength this year.”
Sophomore Sam Tousey will take over the quarterback duties this year, and he’ll have a new player as a top target in Parker Phan.
“Parker has never played football, but comes to us from the soccer program,” Wilson said. “He has the softest hands and has impressed this offseason. We have another new player in Issam Faraj, who will play defensive line. He also plays baseball.”
What to Expect
Wilson and his staff have done a great job of increasing the roster size from 19 players at the end of the 2023 season to 83 players this offseason, and the Wolfpack head man is looking for an improvement in 2024.
“We have high expectations this year,” Wilson said.
He said that the team looked good in their spring jamboree with Beachside and Episcopal and that cleaning up some issues in the red zone could be the key to a successful 2024 campaign.
“We have to get better inside the 20-yard line,” Wilson said. “That hurt us in the jamboree.”
Prediction
Wilson’s excitement and optimism are hard to ignore. The Wolfpack improves to 6-4 this year as they enter a new district, moving to District 4-2A.
