We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Westminster football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Wildcats this season.
2022 Stats
- Overall Record: 6-5
- Points Scored: 189
- Points Allowed: 160
Key Losses
Westminster will lose a couple of key players to the Naval Academy, including 6-foot, 4-inch DB/WR Henry Chartrand, who was a First Team All-Region 6-4A selection last season. The other Wildcat headed to the Navy Midshipmen is DB Quenton Ezzard, who was a Second Team All-Region selection last year. Offensive lineman Henry Douglas was a Wildcat senior named to the First Team All-Region offensive team last year, and he is headed to Southern Methodist University (SMU) to play for the Mustangs.
DL Johnny Fritz and LB Henry Izlar made the First team All-Region defensive team last season, capping their stellar Westminster careers. Kicker Josh Brockman has graduated, and he’ll be missed. He was the state record holder last season for most FGs in a game with 5. He and LS Sam Reavis were the two Wildcats selected to the All-Region special teams unit.
Who’s Back
Westminster returns some big-time talent this season, including senior All-State punter Carson Wilkie. His 53 punts last season went for an average of 40 yards, with 25 of those punts downed inside the 20-yard line. Westminster will soften the blow of losing Brockman with the return of Kohl’s five-star kicker Will Simpson.
There’s perhaps not a bigger returning player in terms of impact than senior DB/WR Armstrong Jones, whose offers include Toledo, The Citadel, Lehigh, Army, Fordham, Appalachian State, Colgate, William and Mary, and Georgetown. There are several more seeking the services of this outstanding Wildcat senior DB. Watch out for freshmen RB/LB Jack DeButts, Chase Marable, and sophomore Robert Douglas.
What to Expect
The Wildcats head into their second season as a member of Class 4A. They finished as the #4 playoff seed in Region 6 last year. Head coach Gerry Bromberg is one of the state’s longest-tenured head coaches, and he’ll have these Wildcats ready to make a run for the region title in 2023. He has Armstrong Jones back as the team’s leader on and off the field, and he’ll count on Jones to be another set of coaching eyes and ears on the field, too.
Jett Hartley will roam the defensive backfield along with Jones, so look for Westminster to have another stingy defense with those two leading the way. Last year’s defensive unit allowed an average of just 14 points per game. If the Wildcats can muster some more offense this season, that could translate to a few more wins.
Prediction
This Westminster football team finishes 7-4 in 2023.
Game to Watch
Lovett in the season opener on August 18. This game is one of the fiercest rivalries in the state. Just ask each team.
