Region play opened last week in 1-AAAAAA, and although the Wildcats and Blue Devils fell short in their first games, it does nothing to damper the spirits of the faithful.
While the Wildcats were unable to snatch a win from Camden County, the team gave it their all. Playing through torrential downpour the entire night, senior quarterback Seth Shuman finished with 110 yards on 12-of-30 passing attempts. Tim Griffin and Jamarcus Tyson helped pad the offense; Griffin added 37 yards on seven rushing attempts, and Tyson gave the Wildcats 33 yards on five receptions.
Tift County came out on the wrong side of a 42-14 loss to Lee County, but not to be lost in the final score is the outstanding effort of senior running back Barry Bennett. He accounted for 96 yards and one touchdown on 18 carries for the Blue Devils. Sophomore quarterback Griffin Collier went 145 yards (9-19 passing), and R.J. Merriweather also reeled in 4 passes for 80 yards.
Both teams will enter Bazemore-Hyder Stadium on Friday night with something to prove. They had strong starts to their respective seasons, and although a region loss is never desirable, the Wildcats and Blue Devils know that the most important game is the always the next one.
