Vestavia Hills High School Flag Football Player Julia Rose Named ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month for September 2024
After an impactful start to the 2024 high school flag football season, Vestavia Hills High School quarterback Julia Rose has been voted the ITG Next Alabama September 2024 Female Athlete of the Month.
Rose received 83.52% of the possible votes to receive the honor over three additional finalists, spanning across two different sports: Pelham volleyball player Camryn McMinn, Prattville flag football player Kaytie Chandler, and Bob Jones volleyball player Kennedy Vaughn.
In August, Rose helped lead Vestavia Hills to an impressive 5-0 start to the season in which the Rebels outscored opponents a combined 132-13. The QB also led the Vestavia Hills offense to an average of 26.4 points per game.
“Last year, her play helped us get to the state tournament championship game as a 10th-grader,” Vestavia Hills offensive coordinator Doug Rogers said of Rose. “She keeps developing, especially in her ability to throw the ball and read the defenses. She sees the field from a player’s perspective and can read defenses and throw the ball in tight windows. It’s pretty amazing at her young age how well she understands the game and what we’re trying to do in our scheme. It makes a big difference when she’s on the field.”
Rose’s month began on Aug. 24 at the Hoover Flag Football Tournament, in which Vestavia Hills went undefeated at 3-0. In the season opener against John Carroll Catholic, Rose led the Rebels to a 20-0 shutout victory, completing 16-of-27 passes for 155 yards and a touchdown.
Elsewhere in the tournament, Vestavia Hills defeated Hewitt-Trussville 13-7 and Central-Tuscaloosa 32-0.
Against Hewitt-Trussville, Rose completed 12-of-21 passes for 170 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, and she rushed for 7 yards on two attempts.
In the victory over Central-Tuscaloosa, Rose completed 12-of-14 passes for 176 yards and five touchdowns, and she rushed for 4 yards on one attempt.
After the tournament, Vestavia Hills played two additional games in August against Smiths Station and Opelika, both of which the Rebels won 33-12 and 38-6, respectively.
Against Smiths Station, Rose completed 14-of-31 passes for 235 yards and five scores.
Against Opelika, the junior completed 24-of-40 passes for 267 yards and three touchdowns, and she rushed for 10 yards on one attempt.
Across five games in August, Rose posted a completion percentage of 58.6% with 1,003 yards passing, a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 16-to-1, and 21 yards rushing on four attempts.
So far this season, Rose has helped lead Vestavia Hills to a 9-1 overall record in which the offense averaged 30 points per game. Over that span, Rose owns a completion percentage of 55.6% with 2,167 yards passing, a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 35-to-4, and 26 yards rushing on five attempts.
“Just to continue to get better,” Rogers said of what he is looking to see from Rose going forward. “Her challenge is to challenge herself. As we move through the year, different defenses give us different schemes, and different players give us different things going on, and she’s got to recognize that.
“The biggest challenge moving forward is to continue to learn to make the right reads and right throws.”
Congratulations once again to Vestavia Hill flag football player Julia Rose, the ITG Next Alabama September 2024 Female Athlete of the Month, on a stellar start to the season.
