We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 University Christian football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 7-5
- Points Scored: 355
- Points Allowed: 275
Key Losses
One of the Christians’ biggest losses comes on defense in Deric Andrews, who ranked among the team’s leading tacklers a year ago. Jerome Manning and Lamon Robinson were both key losses along the defensive front and Phillip Hartsfield and Alvonte’ Toliver will be missed in the secondary.
On offense, Toliver also saw time at running back and several notable losses come in the receiving game, including Hartsfield, Manning, Ja’won Grey and Marcus Marshall.
Who’s Back
University Christian returns several significant pieces of their offense, headlined by the duo of quarterback Desirrio Riles and running back Orel Gray. Running back Alan Woods also returns after ranking among the Christians’ leading rushers a year ago, and leading receiver Jenoa Alford is back as well.
Defensively, linebacker Luke Thomas returns to lead the University Christian defense, as does star pass rusher Kaydrick Robinson. Riles will also see time on the defensive side of the ball, and Ryan Oakley and Trey Railey are two more names to know.
What to Expect
If you were to label a Class 1M team as a sleeper entering the 2022 season, a good argument could be made for University Christian as that pick. Yes, the Christians did lose a few key names, in particular on defense, but they also return a significant amount of production on offense, along with two of their top defensive players.
After reaching the second round of the Class 2A playoffs, University Christian shouldn’t be counted out for a deeper run this year. Look for the Christians to have a strong season, led by a running game that could be one of the best in the Jacksonville area.
Prediction
University Christian will win at least seven games and reach at least the second round of the playoffs.
