There’s only one thing that can make a Region 1-AAAAAA opener more intense than it already is. And that’s a region opener that features two undefeated football programs.
On Friday night in Leesburg, Ga., the Lee County Trojans will take to their home field to do battle with the Blue Devils of Tift County High School.
For Tift County, the gameplan is simple: Ride the shoulders of the backfield monster named Barry Bennett. In only five games, he has recorded 322 yards on 53 rushing attempts, and is averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Stopping him won’t make matters much easier, as teammates Griffin Collier (14 rushes, 122 yards), Rodrick Gaines (25 rushes, 111 yards), and Deonte Calhoun (11 rushes, 97 yards) share in the explosive output of the Blue Devils’ backfield.
The Trojans’ Garret Morrell is keeping his name in the conversation of the best quarterbacks in the region. Through five games, the 2014 All-Region First Team member has passed for over 500 yards and has also hit the century mark running the ball. His primary target, senior Tray Eafford, is also having an outstanding season, currently sitting at well over 200 yards receiving and averaging right around 20 yards per reception.
The Blue Devils will have to put in work to keep the Trojans’ offense from doing their usual damage. The Trojans have already recorded three shutout wins on the year (42-0 over Crisp, 50-0 over Terrell County, and 56-0 over Mitchell County), and with the way their offense is firing, it would come as no surprise if they managed to hang another 50 on the scoreboard.
One team will leave Trojan Field undefeated. The other will drop their opening Region 1-AAAAAA contest. Which way will the score lean? Be sure to download the Scorestream app to keep up with the action in Leesburg and all surrounding areas!
