Trojan Middle Schoolers Honor Their Mothers

There is nothing like a mother’s love. The bond between a mother and her child is one that can never be mistaken, replaced, or replicated. It takes a special woman to become a mother, and even more so, it takes a special child to fully comprehend the lengths to which a mother will got for him or her. And though we can never fully repay our mothers for their contributions to our lives, it is never wrong to try.

At Coffee Middle School, two young student-athletes have taken on that exact task. At the end of their 2015-16 basketball season, CMS seventh-graders Sedrick Williams and Adrian Wilkerson worked with Trojans’ administration to honor the respective fights of their mothers.

Williams’ mother, Moneriah Sams, is in the midst of a battle with amytrophic lateral sclerosis, commonly referred to as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Tonya Wilkerson, Adrian’s mother, is well-known throughout the community for her fight against breast cancer and ongoing efforts to raise awareness. At their final home contest on January 19, the young men presented their mothers with awards, on behalf of themselves, the school, and the Coffee community, to show their appreciation and respect for these tremendous women.

Sedrick has said that he is “balling for a cure”; while there is currently no known cure for ALS, his hopes are that, one day, in honor of his mother, a cure is found. Adrian, in simplest terms, said that he just wants his mother to know how much he loves and appreciates her.

One thing is for sure: a mother’s love can never be replicated. But, on the other hand, neither can a child’s.
