Thomasville Bulldogs 2024 Football Preview

We tell you everything you need to know about the 2024 Thomasville High School football team in this preview, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Bulldogs this season.

2023 Stats

  • Overall Record: 6-6
  • Points Scored: 320
  • Points Allowed: 351

Key Losses

Thomasville will miss a key skill position player on offense with the graduation of wide receiver Cole Shaw.

Shaw, who was ITG Next’s 2023 Thomasville Offensive Player of the Year, ended his Bulldogs career with 31 catches for 712 yards and nine touchdowns in his final season last year. Shaw was a two-time All-Region and All-State selection in high school and will continue playing at Mercer after signing with the Bears following his senior season.

All-Region offensive lineman Rah’Quez Smiley is a big loss along the line of scrimmage.

On special teams the Bulldogs lose a weapon with the graduation of punter Andrew Bennett.

Who’s Back

Returning this season to lead the Thomasville offense is junior Cam Hill, a dual-threat quarterback who has started for the Bulldogs since his freshman season.

He has top receiving target Nigel Pittman back, along with running back Lavonte Cole, a junior.

Cole has rushed for 919 yards and 14 TDs on 185 carries over the last two seasons. He also serves as an effective receiver out of the backfield, with 19 catches and a couple of TDs.

Providing run and pass blocking up front is returning offensive lineman Jaylen Walden.

On defense the Bulldogs welcome back defensive ends Keymon Jefferson and Geremiah Humbert up front, as well as linebacker Joe Douglas and defensive back AJ Hill Jr.

What to Expect

Head coach Jonathan DeLay said the expectations this season are about as clear as they can be for the Bulldogs in 2024.

“I met with each player leading into this offseason, and they all gave me the same team goal, which was to win a state championship,” DeLay said.

He said that so far the work ethic and dedication has backed up their stated goal.

“It’s one thing to say what you believe, but these guys are doing what they believe,” DeLay said. “We are excited to be in a new region with some familiar rivalries. We can’t wait to get in the grass.”

Prediction

Thomasville has a legitimate shot at accomplishing their goal of a state title this season. A 12-win season will have them on track.
