Thomas County Central Yellow Jackets 2024 Football Preview

We tell you everything you need to know about the 2024 Thomas County Central High School football team in this preview, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Yellow Jackets this season.

2023 Stats

  • Overall Record: 15-0
  • Points Scored: 610
  • Points Allowed: 144

Key Losses

The Yellow Jackets must replace several starters from last year’s Class 6A state title team, especially on offense.

They lose top running back Trey Brenton, who was a two-time All-Region and All-State back and Thomas County Central’s primary rusher. Last year he rushed for 1,719 yards on 265 carries, had 23 catches with 187 yards receiving, and scored 26 TDs combined.

TCC also loses three-star tight end Malachi Thomas, who had 63 catches over the past two seasons and scored eight TDs last season. He is now at Pitt.

The defense will miss hard-hitting safety Tywon Christopher, linebacker Caleb Anderson, and defensive end Walter Reddick.

Defensive back Devin Ross will be missed in the Jackets’ secondary, as will his three interceptions from the 2023 season.

Who’s Back

Thomas County Central has some major talent returning this year, including quarterback Jaylen Johnson. The junior is back to lead a Jackets’ offense that averaged 46 points per game in 2023 en route to the Class 6A state title. Johnson accounted for five TDs in the championship game victory.

Wide receiver Tre’Von Pringle, one of Johnson’s favorite targets last season, returns this year.

On defense, TCC welcomes back four-star defensive end and edge rusher Cam Brooks, who had eight sacks in 2023.

Joining him is elite safety Kendarius Reddick, who led the team with four interceptions last season.

What to Expect

Despite the key losses to graduation, don’t expect much of a falloff for the Yellow Jackets in 2024. There is plenty of talent to give this team the chance to make another run at a state title this year.

However, head coach Justin Rogers pointed out that the new region TCC moves to will make it a bit harder, as will a couple of new opponents.

“Our region got even tougher this year with the addition of the 4A champ Coffee, so whichever four teams make it to the playoffs, they will definitely be battle tested,” Rogers said.

He also mentioned opponent Florida High, who will come to Central this year and in 2025.

“Florida High will bring a very talented roster to give us a great test,” Rogers said.

Prediction

With so much talent at Thomas County Central, look for them to make another run at a state title game and finish 13-2 overall.

Game to Watch

The last game of the regular season versus Coffee on Nov. 1 could decide the region champion.
