Several Georgia high school football teams have made a statement in almost every game played this season. They have raced past their opponents, often achieving blowout wins by 30 or more points. Some teams have used a high-flying passing attack to obliterate competitors, while others have relied on suffocating defense. Here’s a look at the 10 GHSA teams that have posted the largest average margins of victory through Week 11 of the 2022 season.
10. Perry – 30.89 points per game
The Panthers began playing football in 1954, but last season brought the program its first 10-win season. They are well on their way to making it back-to-back double digit-win campaigns with a stifling defense that has allowed only 48 points in the last eight games. The offense averages just over 42 points per contest, while a ball-hawking secondary has secured 15 interceptions to help preserve weekly blowout wins for this Middle Georgia high school team.
9. Calvary Day – 31.38 points per game
The Cavaliers’ unblemished record so far includes a pair of one-score wins over ELCA and Savannah Christian. That hasn’t stopped them from unloading frustration on lesser opponents, especially in region play. The past four weeks have seen nearly 200 offensive points with only three touchdowns allowed. With one regular-season game remaining, that margin of victory total may inflate before the start of a rugged Class 3A playoff season.
8. Cedartown – 32.44 points per game
Cedartown’s defense has been a sight to behold. The Bulldogs have allowed fewer than 60 total points in their nine wins, which include victories over four ranked opponents. Early-season offensive inconsistency has seemed to evaporate in region play, as the Bulldogs have posted at least 39 points in every region game so far. There’s no surprise as to why Cedartown is considered a title favorite in 4A.
7. Johnson County – 33.11 points per game
This is the Trojans’ best season in nearly a decade, mostly thanks to one of the classification’s most consistent, well-rounded teams. In six of Johnson County’s nine wins, the defense has allowed either six or seven points, while the offense has topped 40. A six-point overtime victory over ECI represents the closest margin of victory for the Trojans in this 2022 Georgia high school season, but all other matchups have been blowout wins.
6. Swainsboro – 33.88 points per game
Swainsboro’s defense may be one of the best in the state. Five of the Tigers’ eight wins have resulted in runaway shutouts, including a 42-point victory over then-ranked Washington County. Even when the offense isn’t able to score its usual 40 points, Swainsboro’s vaunted front seven shuts down any opponent’s offensive attack. If only their matchup against Irwin County had not been canceled …
5. Thomson – 34.11 points per game
The Thomson offense has been dynamite this season, posting six wins in which more than 45 points were scored. Granted, those floodgates often were opened on lesser opponents; however, both sides of the football have come through in the biggest moments, such as in a 24-point win over Putnam County for the region title. It appears that losing Tay Martin hasn’t affected the Bulldogs’ rushing attack.
4. Coffee – 34.22 points per game
The Trojans suffered a loss to Bainbridge, but that has mostly been forgotten in the wake of great team football in all eight wins. All three phases of the game are elite, enabling Coffee to beat teams by an average of more than 34 points per game. Minus a 65-0 blowout of Salem, most of the Trojans’ wins have been by between 30 to 40 points, a very consistent mark.
3. Savannah Christian – 34.44 points per game
2011 flashbacks, anyone? This Savannah Christian squad is on pace to be the school’s second-highest scoring of all time, bettered only by that undefeated championship team of 11 years ago. Despite a six-point loss to rival Calvary Day, the Raiders’ offense has been explosive, scoring over 40 points in all but one game. The defense has done its part, too, but this historic offensive attack garners most of the attention.
2. North Oconee – 41.33 points per game
After two thrilling, season-opening victories, the Titans devastated region opponents with one of the state’s top defenses, which allows just 5 points per game (tied with Swainsboro). An improved offensive attack has led to spurts of 50+ points against four opponents, including a whopping 83-point win over East Hall last past weekend. This may be the hottest team in 4A right now.
1. Langston Hughes – 44.89 points per game)
The Panthers’ performance has been simply phenomenal. Class 6A’s preseason favorite now has a legitimate case for being the best team in the state. The Panther offense has scored 40 points in every game and the defense has allowed only 24 points in its last six meetings. No opponent has come within 26 points of Langston Hughes, and there’s a real chance that trend holds through the 6A playoffs. The Panthers’ streak of blowout wins surely qualify them as one of the most dominant teams in recent Georgia high school football history.
