A tennis camp known as MaliVai Washington started 22 years ago in a Durkeeville neighborhood has now morphed into something much bigger: one of the greatest lifesavers in Jacksonville’s urban core.
Washington’s initial vision was to give back to the community by teaching them tennis, a sport that they might have never considered.
“Early on, it wasn’t more than a tennis program,” Washington said. “We were going into
inner-cities where there wasn’t tennis. Football and basketball were king, and are still king. We went into those communities and started introducing tennis.”
