We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 St. Augustine football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 6-3
- Points Scored: 296
- Points Allowed: 160
Key Losses
The Yellow Jackets’ offense will have to replace some key names from last season. The group is headlined by quarterback Trevon Dirden, who was a significant part of both the passing and running game. Aside from Dirden, the majority of St. Augustine’s losses on offense come at receiver, with no name bigger than Treyvion Beamon, who led the Yellow Jackets at that position.
On defense, two-way player Tyshawn Campbell is a significant name who has moved on, as is defensive lineman Marcello Bernardi. Raidon Olores-Maeda is also a key loss along the defensive front, and Mark Brown and Jovien Hamilton are two more key contributors who have moved on.
Who’s Back
From what was a strong St. Augustine defense last season, the Yellow Jackets return some of their top tacklers, including Ja’ki Singleton and Jakwame Moore. Pablo Rivera is a key returnee in the secondary, while other names, such as Michael Koliner and Jacob Broxton, could play key roles in 2022.
On offense, undoubtedly the Yellow Jackets’ biggest returning name is running back Devonte Lyons, a rising junior who rushed for 13 touchdowns a year ago. Also a prominent pass catcher for the Yellow Jackets, Lyons is certainly a name to know entering the season, as are others such as Ivyn Collins and Myles Simmons.
What to Expect
Coming off a strong season a year ago, St. Augustine should return in 2022 with a strong defense once again, led by the duo of Singleton and Moore. On offense, the potential is there for the Yellow Jackets to be strong again, in particular through the running game, but they’ll have to replace a few names at key positions, most notably at quarterback. Overall, expect St. Augustine to have yet another strong season in 2022, and for the Yellow Jackets to be in playoff contention at season’s end.
Prediction
St. Augustine will be in playoff contention in 2022.
