Rush Propst Out as Valdosta Football Head Coach
A day filled with drama and speculation about the future of the Valdosta football program and its coach ended Tuesday night with the Valdosta City Schools Board of Education voting 5-3 to not renew the contract of head coach Rush Propst. His contract will expire on June 30.
An item on the board’s agenda surfaced early Tuesday that read “i.Non-renewal: 1 head football coach at VHS.” This fueled speculation during the day that the board was prepared to take action on Propst’s status as the Wildcats head coach, which they indeed did after exiting from executive session at the board meeting.
The vote was taken after a recommendation by Superintendent Dr. Todd Cason to the board to not renew Propst’s contract.
The board members voting in favor of the non-renewal began with a motion made by Trey Sherwood, followed by votes from Debra Bell, Stacy Bush, Liz Shumpard, and Tad Moseley. The three members voting in favor of renewing the coach’s contract was Tyra Howard, Kelisa Brown, and Warren Lee.
This morning, Propst told ITG Next that he couldn’t comment on the board’s decision based on the advice of his attorneys, but he did say that he hopes the truth will come out eventually. Propst added that he hoped to be able to say more abut his future plans in the upcoming week, but did say he had no timetable on when that may be.
Cason could not be reached for comment directly on the matter, but according to local reports, he said that that he and the board were “moving forward and looking for a new football coach.”
