Ladies and gentlemen, the time is finally here. The “second season” officially gets underway, as the 2015 GHSA Playoffs are slated to begin on Friday.
The Valdosta Wildcats, led by head coach Rance Gillespie, will open the postseason on the road as they travel to North Cobb High School (Acworth, Ga.) to take on the Warriors. They secured the third seed in Region 1-AAAAAA in the final game of the season with a come-from-behind win at home over the Lee County Trojans (Leesburg, Ga.). North Cobb heads into the game as the second seed from Region 4-AAAAAA.
This is only the second meeting of the two teams; their last matchup took place in the 2012 playoffs. The Warriors took the last contest by a score of 42-14, which was only their second state playoff win in school history (and first since 1959). The Wildcats will look for redemption at Emery Sewell Stadium, and momentum is on their side; they come into the game riding a two-game win streak from the regular season.
The Warriors enter the game having won their season finale against Kennesaw Mountain (Kennesaw, Ga.). The winner of Friday’s game will move on to the next round to face either the Wheeler Wildcats (Marietta, Ga.) or Grayson Rams (Loganville, Ga.) on November 20.
