Ribault Looks to Go Farther Next Year in Playoffs

After his first season Jean Ribault’s head coach Kelvin Smith took the Trojans to great heights going into the third round of the playoffs last season. Smith was a defensive coordinator for the school before taking over as head coach last season. Before coming to Ribault, Smith was a linebacker at Florida State University.

Smith tells In the Game Sports how his defense was the strong suit of his team last year. “We need to put up more points on offense to help our defense out,” Smith said. As a defensive player himself, that is his strong suit of knowledge. He believes if they get better on offense they will become a school that is a lot harder to beat in the long run.

This season, the Trojans lost 20 players to graduation, but have another bulk of upcoming seniors to lead the way. Smith also talks about how it is important to win the district this year like they did last year. Now there is 3A state champion Trinity Christian and football powerhouse Bolles joining their region this year, which will make it more challenging. The two games marked on the calendar this season are Yulee and Suwanee, who always give them a great challenge.
