Resilience

At the age of 20, Simone Biles has already won fourteen Olympic medals, and has accomplished more than most could ever hope for. The gymnast took home four gold medals at the 2016 Rio Games and captivated viewers with her cheery personality. It would be easy to assume that Biles had an easy childhood, or that after the Rio Games her life has been smooth sailing. However, the gymnast had a rough start in the world and continues to battle hardships everyday. Biles’ life started out living in and out of foster cares due to her mother’s continuous battle with drug and alcohol. Luckily, Biles and her sister were adopted in 2003 by their grandparents. This allowed Biles to find her passion for gymnastics. Yet, even after Olympic success, Biles still has struggles.Biles faced scrutiny over her body from the media. However, Biles still handled these mean comments with refinery by replying: “…It’s MY body. I love it & I’m comfortable in my skin.” Simone Biles’ resilience and positivity are commendable and definitely what it means to live in the game.
