Kyle Muller of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas (also known simply as Dallas Jesuit) is the best of both worlds. While Rangers’ baseball team currently holds a 17-4-2 record on the 2016 season (including a perfect 5-0 district record), he is leading the nation in homeruns (12), and his feats extend beyond the bat.
On March 11, the senior pitcher struck out the final two hitters in the Rangers’ win over the defending Class AAAAA State Champion Prosper Eagles (Prosper, Texas). His hot hand would continue into their next contest; in a five-inning 14-0 thrashing of the Sunset Bison (Dallas, Texas), Muller proceeded to send another 15 batters back to the dugout on swings, also recording a no-hitter along the way. This outstanding performance was followed by an outing that saw him take down yet another 18 opponents in the team’s March 28 3-0 shutout against Irving Tigers (Irving, Texas).
After an Irving batter recorded a base hit, Muller would go on to strike out the next batter, bringing his total to an astonishing 36 consecutive outs via strikeout. He also set a new national high school record with 33 straight strikeouts; his milestone eclipses the former record of 22, which was originally set by Sonora’s Jim Peterson in 1973 (and later tied by Gunner Baker of Carlisle High School, in Price, Texas, in 2013).
Given this unprecedented pace, we should expect to see big things in the future from Muller, as he is set to continue his baseball career at the next level as a member of the Longhorns of the University of Texas. In his final high school career, he currently holds a 4-0 record with an ERA of 0.42 in 33 innings and 66 strikeouts.
