Oneonta High School Softball Player Ashtyn Sligh Named ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month for May 2024
Oneonta High School softball player Ashtyn Sligh, one of the state’s most impressive players in the circle this season, has been voted the ITG Next Alabama Female Athlete of the Month for May 2024, receiving 54.45% of the possible votes over three additional finalists.
Those finalists alongside Sligh were Saint James soccer player Katie Brightwell, West Limestone softball player Lilly Bethune, and Wetumpka softball player Mya Holt.
To keep things simple, it will be hard to find a better month in the circle than what was a reality for Sligh in April, a month in which Oneonta went 9-7 overall. Sligh allowed only two earned runs across her 46.2 innings pitched during April, while also owning a stellar strikeout-to-walk ratio of 73-to-6.
Of her eight appearances in the circle, six were outings in which she did not allow an earned run, as well as her having three double-double strikeout games that came in victories over Cold Springs, Cleveland, and Etowah.
Sligh also made an impact offensively, owning a .217 batting average (5-for-23) across nine games. Sligh also had one double, two RBIs, and one stolen base during the month.
For the season Sligh helped lead Oneonta to an 18-26-1 record in Class 4A, but even with less-than-stellar results, it was still an impressive all-around season for the junior, especially in the circle.
In 27 appearances as a pitcher, Sligh posted a 7-4 record across 148.2 innings pitched, along with a phenomenal 0.57 ERA and strikeout-to-walk ratio of 192-to-19, with opponents also batting for a combined .174 average against her.
Offensively, Sligh slashed a combined .261/.305/.340 across 33 games at the plate, along with having 18 RBIs. Sligh also had seven doubles and two stolen bases for the year.
Congratulations once again to Oneonta softball player Ashtyn Sligh on a special month and season.
