We’re down to the final eight teams in Class AAAAAA, and leading the way, once again, are the defending-champion Colquitt County Packers. They are the sole Region One team remaining after losses by Camden County and Valdosta.
The Packers have been on a tear thus far in the postseason, storming through their first two games with an average win margin of 36.5 points per contest. In the most recent win over Central Gwinnett (Lawrenceville, Ga.), Colquitt used a 34-0 run to open a scoring margin which resulted in a running clock for the final quarter of play. Senior quarterback Chase Parrish completed 18-of-25 passing attempts for 275 yards and four touchdowns, leading a Packer offense that finished the night with 473 yards.
As expected, with a deeper run in the playoffs comes stronger competition, and Colquitt County will face their toughest yet in the South Forsyth War Eagles (Cumming, Ga.). The War Eagles only dropped one game on the year, which was a narrow four-point loss to West Forsyth on the road. Since the loss, they have reeled off five consecutive victories, including postseason wins over Norcross and Tucker in the first two rounds.
For the first time in the playoffs, the defending champions will have to take a road trip; since both teams come into the game as champions of their respective regions, the War Eagles have secured home-field advantage for Friday’s matchup after a coin toss at the GHSA headquarters in Thomaston. The road has yet to play spoiler for the Packers; however, their opponent is also undefeated in 2015 at War Eagle Stadium.
The winner of Friday’s game will move on to the GHSA Class AAAAAA Semi-Finals to square off against either the Mill Creek Hawks (Hoschton, Ga.) or the Archer Tigers (Lawrenceville, Ga.) on November 27. (A matchup with the Archer Tigers would be a rematch of the 2014 Championship Game, in which the Packers won 28-24.)
