We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Mandarin football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 5-5
- Points Scored: 225
- Points Allowed: 217
Key Losses
A majority of the Mustangs’ key losses from last season come on the defensive side of the ball, with arguably no name bigger than Tony Carter. One of Mandarin’s leading tacklers last season, Carter averaged almost 15 tackles per game for the Mustangs’ defense, totaling well over 100 for the year.
In addition to Carter, names such as Jalen Deadwyler and Daron Dukes were also key players on the Mandarin defense who have moved on, along with others such as Juan-Luke Fouche, Kylon Washington, and Antwan Murphy. Offensively, the Mustangs lose two key names in running back Terrance Johnson and wide receiver Treyvon Jolly, with Johnson finishing the season as Mandarin’s leading rusher.
Who’s Back
Mandarin returns a few significant pieces on defense in Carmello Murphy, Jackson Copeland and Michael Wyche, all three of whom ranked among the Mustangs’ top tacklers last season. Phillip Makauskas will also be a key piece for Mandarin along the defensive front. Johnathon Mitchell and Antoine Belgrave-Shorter will do the same in the secondary.
As for the offense, quarterback Tramell Jones Jr. returns for his sophomore season, and will have three experienced options to throw to at receiver: Kieren Jackson, Jeremiah Shack and Koron Hayward. Jaime French is also a name to watch for at receiver; the rising sophomore could be set for a massive 2022 season.
What to Expect
Entering year one under new head coach Toby Bullock, Mandarin has the potential to be a surprise team in 4M-Region 1, one that could very easily be in contention for a playoff spot at season’s end. However, Mandarin will have to finish games better to do so – three of the Mustangs’ five losses came in one-possession games a year ago.
Overall, the Mustangs should be improved in 2022 due to the talent returning on both sides of the ball. This is a team that could potentially surprise some people, depending on breakout seasons from a few of their younger players.
Prediction
Mandarin will win six games this season and be in contention for the playoffs.
