Lake Gibson Wrestler Frank Solorzano Voted ITG Next Florida Male Athlete of the Month

When looking at the landscape of high school wrestling within the state of Florida, you won’t find many programs who have been more successful in recent years than Lake Gibson.

A program that won three Class 2A state duals championships in recent years, the Braves were already cemented as one of, if not the top programs in the state entering the month of January. However, as you might know, Lake Gibson added yet another state duals title to that list during the month of January, the fourth for the program in the last five years.

A big reason for this? Junior Frank Solorzano, our ITG Next Florida Male Athlete of the Month who received 95.51 percent of the votes.

While you could make the case that high school wrestling is an individual, one-on-one sport considering that there is one single athlete in a match, it is also a team sport, especially in duals competition. Because of this, it requires a true team effort to win a state duals title, and that is exactly what the Braves received in wins over River Ridge and Merritt Island, as well as in the finals against Jesuit, carrying a 33-30 lead into the final matchup.

Holding the lead, Lake Gibson would call on Solorzano for the 182-pound matchup, facing off against Jesuit’s Josiah Jenkins. As you’ve likely assumed by now, it was an impressive all-around showing for the junior winning the match 7-2, and clinching the state title for the Braves in the process 36-30.

In addition to this, Solorzano also picked up other significant wins during the month of January, headlined by two wins in the region semifinals and finals against East River and Winter Springs.

Not only was this a phenomenal month for Solorzano, but for Lake Gibson wrestling overall, one that was capped with yet another state duals title. Congrats to Lake Gibson’s Frank Solorzano, our ITG Next Florida Male Athlete of the Month.
