Kenzie Wyman, Lassiter Basketball Standout, Voted ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month

Lassiter High School Junior Kenzie Wyman Named ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month for January 2024

Lassiter High School Junior Kenzie Wyman Named ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month for January 2024

Congratulations to Lassiter High School girls basketball player Kenzie Wyman, who has been named our January 2024 ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month, presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance

Wyman was one of four Georgia high school athletes nominated for the award. Other nominees chosen for consideration were Nya Smith, a senior guard for the Milton High School girls basketball team; Kemara Washington, a senior on the Dalton High School girls basketball team; and Marigona Lau, a sophomore wrestler for Glynn Academy.

Wyman, a junior, is a three-year starter for the Lassiter girls squad, and her position on the court really depends on whatever her coach and team need at any given moment, according to Lady Trojans head coach Joannah Mackenny.

“Kenzie is a very versatile player who can adjust her role on the floor based on where we need her,” Mackenny said.

Wyman was used primarily at the post last year, and this season she has been moved to guard, according to her coach.

“Kenzie sees the floor really well,” Mackenny said. “She can bring the ball up the court, she can shoot it really well, and when she needs to go down low and bang it out (as a post player), she can do that too. … She is really good at creating scoring opportunities.”

That includes creating plenty of scoring opportunities for herself, as Wyman is one of the best 3-point shooters in the state and in the country.

According to the most recent stats on MaxPreps, Wyman is ranked as the third best 3-point shooter in Georgia with 53 made. In the junior class, she is ranked No. 52 in the country.

So far this season, Wyman is averaging 14 points per game through the first 21 games of the season. She is also averaging 5.1 rebounds per game, which is almost unheard of for a point guard.

“That’s a high number of rebounds for a guard, but that’s what Kenzie does,” Mackenny said. “She finds a way to help her team wherever she is needed.”

Wyman was gracious when told she had won the award for Female Athlete of the Month.

“I am so honored to be selected out of such great fellow nominees,” she said. “I love this sport and am so glad people can see my passion and hard work.”

In 2021, the WNBA’s Atlanta Dream selected Wyman as one of their two co-captains for Nike Game Growers, a program that aims to increase girls’ participation in sports. Wyman said that her hope of seeing more females participate in sports has shaped her future goals.

“My favorite subject is marketing, and I plan to major in business/sports marketing,” she said. “I especially want to promote women in sports.”

As far as her basketball future is concerned, Wyman is keeping those hopes alive too.

“I would love to play at the next level and am training and conditioning with the hopes of playing in college,” she said.
