Cross Creek Basketball Player Jordyn Dorsey Voted ITG Next Georgia Female Athlete of the Month
Jordyn Dorsey polished off a stellar high school basketball career with a dominating performance in her final game as a Cross Creek senior.
In the GHSA Class 3A state championship contest at Macon’s Coliseum, Dorsey was practically unstoppable as she scored 30 points to lead her Lady Razorbacks team to a 56-44 victory over defending state champion Greater Atlanta Christian. Dorsey’s point total was perfectly balanced, with 15 points in each half.
Her performance topped off what has been a truly special career at Cross Creek. In addition to her performance leading the Razorbacks to a state championship, she also ended up as the all-time scoring leader at Cross Creek High School, with 1,953 career points. (The previous record holder was former Cross Creek standout and current Memphis senior Alana Davis).
What makes that accomplishment even better is the fact that she did it in a shortened season. COVID-19-related conditions forced the cancellation of seven games for Cross Creek, thus forcing Dorsey to reach her goal over just 25 games.
Her leadership on and off the court helped the Lady Razorbacks to their first ever state championship. Dorsey finished the season with 562 points, averaging 22.5 points per game. She also averaged six rebounds and three steals per game.
For her performance, Dorsey was voted by our readers and followers as the ITG Next March Athlete of the Month. Dorsey received the most votes out of four athletes that were in the running. The other three nominees were Lee County point guard M.J. Taylor, Houston County Bears standout first baseman and pitcher Coleman Willis, and Savannah Arts Academy Soccer standout Surrena Copeland. All had outstanding performances in their respective sports during the month of March.
Longtime Cross Creek girls basketball coach Kim Schlein has known Dorsey since well before she began coaching her at the high school level. Schlein could see that Dorsey was special.
“Jordyn had all the tools and skills way before I came on the scene,” Schlein said. “I first saw her play when she was a seventh-grader, and you could tell then that she was so far ahead of most players at that age. She not only had the pure athletic skills, but she had the basketball IQ that really set her apart.”
Dorsey has also been named the valedictorian of her graduating class at Cross Creek for her outstanding academic accomplishments. As a great player and student, Dorsey received attention from several colleges and universities, but in the end, she was offered the chance to continue her basketball career at North Carolina A&T, where she’ll play for the Aggies.
