We tell you everything you need to know about the 2023 Grayson football team, including roster changes and what fans can expect from the Rams this season.
2022 Stats
- Overall Record: 10-3
- Points Scored: 403
- Points Allowed: 177
Key Losses
Among the Rams’ losses heading into 2023 is running back Joe Taylor. He was an absolute workhorse of a back over the last four seasons, carrying the ball 515 times for 2,672 yards and 35 TDs. He has taken his talents to Marshall, where he will suit up for the Thundering Herd. Wide receiver Mason Humphrey has also graduated and is headed to Lehigh University to continue his career. RB Joseph Stone and Zion Furgeson have left the program via transfer.
The defense will miss the services of OLB Jalen Smith and DB Cedric Clements. Smith has moved on the University of Tennessee. Grayson will also have to replace both kickers as Paul Duncan and Jimmy Gonzalez have graduated.
Who’s Back
The Rams and new head coach Santavious Bryant will welcome back three returning offensive linemen this season with juniors Bryce Hudson and Josh Threat both coming back, along with senior Walt Flynn. They’ll be joined by returning senior skill position players Jeff “JD” Davis at quarterback, Kylan Fox at tight end, and John Cineas at wide receiver.
Davis has thrown for 2,640 yards along with 19 TDs so far as the Rams signal caller. He has also rushed for 3 TDs. Fox is a ball control TE who will also play on defense, where he has registered 7 sacks over the last two seasons from his DE spot. From his TE position, he has caught 38 passes for 382 yards with a couple of TDs. He and Cineas will likely be Davis’ main targets. Cineas also has 38 receptions, which have gone for 522 receiving yards and 3 TDs. Junior Calan Freeman will take over the kicking duties, according to Bryant.
What to Expect
With the departure of former coach Adam Carter, new head coach Santavious Bryant has the chance to put his imprint on the program. He tells ITG Next that the offense will be an uptempo, spread-style offense, while the defense will be aggressive, which is no surprise, given that Bryant previously oversaw a ball-hawk defensive backfield when he was an assistant at Grayson from 2019 to 2021. His defensive backs were credited with 46 INT over those three seasons, so you can expect to see that same style with the 2023 Rams.
Prediction
There’s a lot of talent on this 2023 Grayson football team. Bryant is the type of coach who gets the most out of his players. I see another 10- or 11-win season and a 11-2 finish.
Game to Watch
Former Coach Adam Carter brings his new team, the Lowndes Vikings, to Grayson on September 22.
