Georgia High School Girls Basketball Season Preview
Last week, I previewed the 2021 GHSA boys basketball season for each of the classification’s reigning state champions. This week, I will be doing the same for the girls. Will any classification have a repeat champion?
7A Girls Champion: Westlake
Coming off the heels of a dominant 2020 season with an overall record of 30-2, Westlake is ranked No. 1 in both the MaxPreps and coaches polls in the state. Led this season by senior South Carolina commit and point guard Raven Johnson, the Lady Lions are primed to capture their fourth straight state championship if they can overcome their lack of size.
6A Girls Champion: Forest Park
Forest Park has the preseason hype in 6A. Senior players Sania Feagin and Jasmine Stevens will look to lead the Lady Panthers back to the state championship, starting with their first game against Lovejoy.
5A Girls Champion: Buford
The Lady Wolves are seeking their fifth straight state championship and will rely on senior point guard Ashyia Willis. Buford will open the season by playing in the Jackson EMC Tip-Off Classic.
4A Girls Champion: Americus-Sumter
The reigning 4A girls champions finished the 2020 season with a 29-2 record, and they are back for more in 2021. The Lady Panthers’ win last season was their second title in five years, and junior point guard Tiffani Goodman is looking to make it three in six.
3A Girls Champion: Greater Atlanta Christian
With four of last year’s five starters returning, the Lady Spartans are in a great spot to repeat as 3A champions. Guards Kaleigh Addie and Jaci Bolden, forward Molly Pritchard, and center Laurren Randolph are all back to lead GAC to a better record than last year’s solid 20-12.
2A Girls Champion: Douglass
Seeking their third-straight title, the Lady Astros will now play in Class 3A. Douglass will open their season at Woodstock before playing their first home game against Heritage. Who will become the new 2A state champ?
1A Public Girls Champion: Wheeler County
After competing in their first state title game since the 1970s last season, and winning, the Lady Bulldogs are out to do it again. While these girls play in the smallest classification, they should not be underestimated. However, after losing eight seniors, it will be tough to repeat.
1A Private Girls Champion: Holy Innocents’
The Lady Golden Bears will look to senior wing Rachel Suttle to continue bringing tremendous value to the team. Holy Innocents’ Episcopal is seeking its third straight state title.
