The Glynn Academy Red Terrors are looking to win their first state title since 1964 when they take the field against the Allatoona Buccaneers at The Georgia Dome on Friday night for the GHSA Class AAAAA State Championship.
The Red Terrors come into the title game after a close battle in the semifinals with the Ware County Gators in Brunswick. It was not an easy win; crucial turnovers nearly allowed Ware County to steal a win on the road.
A game-saving interception by Xavier McClinton saved the season for the Red Terrors, as Ware County was in scoring position. Soon after, Glynn Academy’s Kendall Cross kept Ware’s Olajuwone Smith out of the end zone with a stop at the one-yard line.
Offensively, the duo of Randon Jernigan and University of Georgia commit Deejay Dallas helped to keep Glynn Academy on the positive end of the scoreboard; also contributing in big ways were Garrison Hurd and Kendall Cross.
Last week’s win extends the Red Terrors’ win streak to 10 games; their last loss came on September 18th to Coffee County.
The Buccaneers are playing for their first state title in school history. Since its inception in 2008, the football team has seen its share of success, making the playoffs in every season since 2009. After last year’s semifinal loss to Northside-Warner Robins, Allatoona was finally able to get over the hump after defeating the Northgate Vikings (Newnan, Ga.), 28-7, last week to advance.
Quarterback Brandon Rainey completed six of nine passing attempts for a total of 213 yards and one touchdown, the trio of Jalen Parrish, Brandon Archibald, and Charles Anderson combined for 179 yards on the ground. The Buccaneers combined for 459 all-purpose yards in the win.
Allatoona has been on a roll all year; after an opening week loss to East Paulding, the team has reeled off 13 straight wins by an average of nearly 35 points per contest.
Will the Red Terrors be able to do what hasn’t been done in over half a century, or will the Buccaneers capture their first-ever state title?
