Florida High School Basketball: One 2021-22 State Title Favorite from each Classification

Florida High School Basketball

As we enter the 2021-22 Florida High School Basketball state playoffs, there are a few teams, both boys and girls, that you could argue are the favorite in their respective classification. Here are those seven teams for both boys and girls basketball.

Boys

7A – Dr. Phillips

6A – Pembroke Pines Charter

5A – Riverside-Jacksonville

4A – Calvary Christian

3A – Florida State

2A – Orlando Christian Prep

1A – Newberry

When looking at the arguable favorites among boys’ teams from Classes 7A-1A in Florida High School Basketball, there are arguably only two clear favorites in Pembroke Pines Charter (6A) and Orlando Christian Prep (2A), both of which won state titles a year ago. As for the other classifications, you could make an argument for multiple teams.

Class 3A might be the hardest to predict with multiple teams such as Florida State, Westminster Academy, Riviera Prep, Providence, and Calvary Christian all squarely in the mix, as well as Class 5A with Riverside-Jacksonville, Stranahan, Jesuit, and more all capable of winning it all. Defending Class 7A state champion Dr. Phillips is still the favorite despite a strong season from Miami Columbus, while you could make a case for Calvary Christian and Newberry also being the favorites in 4A and 1A.

Girls

7A – Riverview Sarasota

6A – St. Thomas Aquinas

5A – American Heritage

4A – Lake Highland Prep

3A – Brooks DeBartolo Collegiate

2A – Faith Christian

1A – Ponce De Leon

Similar to boys previously, you could also make an argument for two teams in particular who are clear favorites in American Heritage (5A) and Lake Highland Prep (4A). As for the other classifications, we are likely set for can’t-miss state tournaments from Classes 3A-1A in particular, with multiple teams capable of winning it all this season.

Class 3A has anywhere from four-to-five teams you could argue have a chance to win a state title this season, while 2A and 1A also have a similar number of teams, including defending Class 1A state champion Ponce De Leon as the arguable favorite. Classes 7A and 6A also have two-to-three teams you could make an argument for such as Riverview Sarasota, Dr. Phillips, and Gulf Coast in 7A, as well as a likely rematch set between defending state champion St. Thomas Aquinas and Wekiva at some point.
