The Fitzgerald Purple Hurricane football team is running through the competition and making their intentions clear: It is state title or bust in 2015. The regular season was a strong start; the team opened the year with a six-game win streak before falling in a narrow loss to the Brooks County Trojans (Quitman, Ga.) in Week Seven. Since then, however, they have not lost again; they are currently riding another six-game win streak, which the team will take into Louisville on Friday to face the Jefferson County Warriors in the GHSA Class AA State Semifinals.
Fitzgerald comes into Friday’s game after an impressive 54-28 win over the Benedictine Cadets (Savannah, Ga.) in the last round; on the other side, Jefferson County narrowly edged the Rabun County Wildcats (Tiger, Ga.), 31-28, to earn their shot against the Purple Hurricane this week.
Friday’s contest will serve as somewhat of a rubber match for the teams. In their history, they have split the previous two games; Fitzgerald took the first game in 2012, while Jefferson County won the rematch in 2013.
The winner of Friday’s game will move on to the GHSA Class AA State Championship Game against either the Pace Academy Knights (Atlanta, Ga.) or the Greater Atlanta Christian Spartans (Norcross, Ga.). A win for the Purple Hurricane would mark Fitzgerald’s first appearance in the title game in 15 years; their last visit ended in a 6-0 loss to the Swainsboro Tigers (Swainsboro, Ga.) in 2000.
