Orangeville Prep (Ontario, Canada) senior Thon Maker has easily established himself as one of the premier basketball players in the United States college basketball recruiting ranks. He is a top-five college prospect, and he is only getting better.
Born in South Sudan, his family relocated to Uganda, and eventually Australia, to escape an impending civil war. It was in Australia that he began playing basketball. He later relocated to the United States, settling at Carlisle School in Martinsville, Virginia in 2012.
As a freshman at Carlisle, he averaged 23.4 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 4.9 blocks per game. During his sophomore year, his numbers were nearly identical (21.3 points, 13.3 rebounds, 4.2 blocks). His talent has helped him receive numerous collegiate offers from the Division I elite, including looks from Kansas, Kentucky, Duke, Louisville, Arizona, Florida, and Georgetown.
Off the court, Maker is just as impressive. An outstanding student, he is on track to finish high school early. Originally scheduled to graduate in 2016, he recently announced via Twitter that he plans to reclassify into the Class of 2015. Early graduation gives him a myriad of options. He could either enter college early, travel overseas to further improve his craft, or he could remain at Orangeville as a postgraduate student. All three of these options would still allow him to possibly enter the NBA raft in 2016, should he choose to do so.
