Dallan “Deebo” Coleman Named Mr. Basketball Florida

The state of Florida officially named its “2021 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Basketball” on April 9. Dallan “Deebo” Coleman was the talented player who received the honor. The 6-foot-6 senior guard was chosen by a decisive margin by the statewide panel of high school basketball coaches and media personnel through a three-step process.

Coleman received 10 of the available 21 first-place votes and 138 total points to surpass six other finalists for the award.

He is part of the West Nassau High team, who play in the Class 4A classification of the Florida High School Athletic Association.

The Warriors finished the season in the tournament’s Final Four.

“It’s the highest honor in the state,” said West Nassau head coach and Deebo’s father Ran Coleman to The Nassau County Record. “I am so excited. I’ve been having tears of joy for over an hour.”

The younger Coleman is the first athlete from Nassau County to receive the award, and is the 33rd all-time recipient since the award was created in 1983. He was also named the Class 4A Player of the Year.

He finishes his high school basketball career with 2,539 total points, and a per-game average of 24.7 points, nine rebounds, 2.2 steals and 4.2 assists. Coleman also led the Warriors to their first-ever Final Four appearance.

“Since the day he walked into West Nassau, he has been the most humble and hard-working kid I have ever seen,” said West Nassau Athletic Director Randalyn Bryant.

The Georgia Institute of Technology signee spent all four years of his high school career at West Nassau, but spent his time before that in the state of Tennessee.

“He was moved to a new environment, new city, and where there was pressure to be good as the coach’s kid,” said Bryant. “He handled all of it with humility and grace.”

Class 6A Player of the Year Tre Carroll of Charlotte High finished second, with five first-place votes and 121 total points. Class 7A Player of the Year Mike James of Oak Ridge finished third, followed by Class 3A POY Emmanuel Sharp of Bishop McLaughlin and Class 2A POY Aaron Jones of Evangelical Christian to round out the top five vote getters.
