We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Clay football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.

2021 Stats

  • Overall Record: 7-3
  • Points Scored: 259
  • Points Allowed: 192

Key Losses

The Clay offense is tasked with replacing some key names, including the quarterback/wide receiver combo of Billy Mobley and D’Maurion Frazier. Leading rusher Chris Goldstein is also a key loss for the Blue Devils, as are Brandon Peavy, Al’Querious Ray, and David Ford.

On defense, several of the Blue Devils’ leading tacklers have moved on, including Brandon Combs, Jonathan Rouw, and Jaycobb Colson, who ranked second for Clay in sacks a year ago. More key losses include Zach Fordham, Traquan Wimbush and Martez Martin.

Who’s Back

The biggest returning name for the Blue Devils is two-way player Jarvis Lee, a three-star prospect and one of the leaders of the Clay secondary. Alongside Lee, the Blue Devil defense also returns Blake Thompson, who collected a team-high eight sacks a year ago. Dominic Martin and Errick Fryer are two more prominent returning defenders.

Offensively for Clay, the biggest name to know is wide receiver Payton Dykas, who ranked among the Blue Devils’ leaders in receiving last season. Other names to watch for include rising juniors Jaden Paulk and Cam Garcia.

What to Expect

The Blue Devils missed the playoffs a year ago, but they have some key contributors, led by Jarvis Lee, who could help them take that next step this season. The defense should be a strength for the Blue Devils, in particular with the pass rush. The offense is probably the biggest questions facing this Clay team in 2022 – the potential is there, though.

Prediction

Clay will win seven games and will be in contention for the playoffs.
