We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Cardinal Gibbons football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 11-2
- Points Scored: 425
- Points Allowed: 219
Key Losses
From what was a strong Cardinal Gibbons defense a year ago, the Chiefs have to replace a few notable names, with none bigger than edge rusher Mason Thomas, who collected 64 tackles and seven sacks. Ahmad Moten and leading tackler Tray Brown are also two significant losses in the front seven, while Joshua Oliver is another key name who has since moved on.
On offense, Cardinal Gibbons’ biggest losses are evident at wide receiver. The Chiefs have to replace three of their top four players at the position in Davon Kiser, Elisha Edwards, and Gabriel Morgan, a trio that combined for over 1,000 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
Who’s Back
The impressive Cardinal Gibbons offense of 2021 returns a majority of its production, headlined by the quarterback/running back duo of Dylan Rizk and Kamari Moulton, who combined for more than 25 rushing touchdowns. Willie Reed returns alongside Moulton in the backfield, while the Chiefs’ wide receiver group is led by the trio of Patrick Stepelton, Komani Beneby, and Jesse Anderson, a two-way player who was Cardinal Gibbons’ top receiver last season.
Defensively, arguably the biggest returning name is rising junior DB Casey Etienne Jr. A few of the Chiefs’ leading tacklers also return in Tre’Mone Drisdom, Greg Otten, and Adonis Allen. Other notable defensive names include Broc Weaver, Christopher Williams, Romell Dorcin, Carlos Dales Jr., and Jeremiah Makins.
What to Expect
The back-to-back Class 4A state champions, Cardinal Gibbons now looks to make it three straight state titles, and based on the level of returning talent alone, the Chiefs will have a strong chance to do just that. Expect another solid defense and an offense that will be among the best in Class 2M. This team could be in the mix as one of the state’s top overall teams, so don’t be surprised if the Chiefs match their win total from 2021, despite being in a loaded 2M-District 12.
Prediction
Cardinal Gibbons will win at least 10 games and reach at least the state semifinals.
