Camden County High School Wrestler Brandon Higgins Named ITG Next Georgia Male Athlete of the Month for February 2024
Congratulations to Camden County High School wrestler Brandon Higgins, who has been named our February 2024 ITG Next Georgia Male Athlete of the Month, presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance.
Higgins was one of four exceptional athletes considered for the honor. The other nominees were Sandy Creek boys basketball player Micah Smith, Grayson boys basketball player Jacob Wilkins, and Kell boys basketball player CJ Brown.
Followers of ITG Next vote each month for the athlete they think is most deserving of the award, and this month Higgins received the largest percentage of votes to take home the honor.
Higgins, a sophomore, has proven to be one of the state’s top wrestlers in his first two seasons with Camden County. He played a big part in leading the Wildcats to the Class 7A GHSA Boys Team Dual Wrestling State Championship the last two years.
The Wildcats’ 2024 team dual wrestling state title win marks the 10th straight and 11th overall for head wrestling coach Jess Wilder and his Camden County grapplers.
Wrestling in the 120-pound class, Higgins was one of seven individual winners in this year’s duals state championship match held in Buford, Georgia. Higgins’ victory turned out to be one of the most critical wins in Camden County’s slim 32-31 victory over home team Buford.
“Brandon pinned a two-time state champion from Buford in the first period for 6 team points,” Wilder said. “That was huge, especially with us winning by just 1 point.”
In fact, that marked two straight years that Higgins has taken down a Wolves state champion.
“Brandon has been the difference maker in both our state duals championships the past two years,” Wilder said.
Higgins also played a big part in Camden County’s most recent state title win, with the Wildcats also taking home the Class 7A GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championship this year. The traditional matches were held in Macon, Georgia, and all 14 of Camden County’s wrestlers placed, capturing either first, second, or third in their respective weight classes. Higgins placed third in the 120-pound class.
“Brandon lost in OT to a nationally ranked opponent from Mill Creek,” Wilder said.
Higgins has a 62-8 record over his first two seasons of wrestling at Camden County, and his future with the Wildcats looks bright.
“Brandon is a quiet and humble kid,” Wilder said. “He is an excellent student, and with him only being a 10th-grader, we expect even bigger things from him these next two years.”
Congratulations again to our February 2024 ITG Next Georgia Male Athlete of the Month, presented by Georgia Farm Bureau Insurance, Camden County wrestler Brandon Higgins.
