Former Defensive Coordinator Returns to Lead Wildcats Football Program, Gets Ringing Endorsement From Former Head Coach Jeff Herron
Just two days after announcing the dismissal of Travis Roland as its head football coach, a stunning announcement was made that Camden County High School had already found his replacement to take over the Wildcats in Jon Lindsey.
“Camden County Schools is proud to announce the appointment of Coach Jon Lindsey as the new Head Football Coach of the Camden County High School Wildcats. Coach Lindsey assumes leadership of the program following the departure of Coach Travis Roland ,” Camden County Schools announced in a press release Friday morning.
Lindsey served as an assistant for 10 years at Camden County under former head coach Jeff Herron, including as defensive coordinator on Camden County’s 2008 and 2009 state championship teams and again from 2021 to 2023 during Herron’s most recent return to Camden County. Soon after his hiring was announced on Friday, Lindsey said that he is excited to return to the place he called home in the past.
“All glory to God,” Lindsey said. “Camden is a great community and school system. I am honored to coach here again.”
He underscored how big football is in Kingsland, Georgia.
“Big-time Region 1 football at the beach! Go Blue Cats,” he said enthusiastically.
Herron said he fully endorses Camden County’s decision to go with Lindsey.
“Jon’s a tremendous person and a great family man, and he was one of the first guys I called when I came back (to Camden County),” Herron said. “Jon was a big part of all the success we had at Camden County. He was the defensive coordinator for the past two state championship teams at Camden, and he helped us make that run to the semifinals in 2023. Jon is a great friend and just a great person, and I’m happy for him and the family and very happy for the Camden family as well. I think it was a really good hire.”
The announcement of Lindsey’s hiring comes on a day when the four Region 1-6A playoff teams begin their opening round postseason games. Camden County is not one of them. The Wildcats finished as the fifth team this year in Region 1-6A, missing the state playoffs for the first time since 2017.
