We tell you everything you need to know about the 2022 Buchholz football team in this preview. We take a look at roster changes and what fans can expect from the team this season.
2021 Stats
- Overall Record: 12-2
- Points Scored: 465
- Points Allowed: 146
Key Losses
Buchholz’s biggest losses from the 2021 season come at wide receiver, where the duo of Quan Lee and Adrian Sermons were the Bobcats’ two top producers at the position, combining for over 15 touchdowns. Lee was also a factor in the running game at times for the Bobcats, and two-way player EJ Gadson is another talented running back who has since moved on.
On defense, Gadson ranked among the Bobcats’ leading tacklers, as did Tavares Williams and Nay’ron Jenkins. Buchholz’s top two pass rushers, Jahari Clemons and Daryus Boyd, are significant losses in the front seven, while others such as Omarion Littles, Daniel Rattner, and Jaxon Bruce also have to be replaced.
Who’s Back
The Bobcats return a significant amount of production on offense, with the headline name of that group being quarterback Creed Whittemore, a rising senior who threw for upwards of 2,000 yards while also leading Buchholz in rushing. Elsewhere on the Bobcat offense, Amarius Maddox and Quinton Cutler return at running back, while Ja’Carree Kelly, who caught over 30 passes a year ago, returns to lead a wide receiver group that added PK Younge transfer Jaren Hamilton.
Defensively, Buchholz’s biggest returnee is defensive lineman Gavin Hill, and two other prominent pass rushers, Kendall Jackson and Thomas Weinhardt, also are back. The Bobcats’ secondary returns a key name in Donny Hiebert, who likely will start at safety this season.
What to Expect
Arguably the top preseason team in 4S-Region 1, the Bobcats enter the season after a 2021 campaign in which they reached the Class 7A state semifinals. With plenty of key players back and an electric offense, Buchholz should again be in position to make a deep playoff run. Keep an eye on that offense – the Bobcats could be really good on that side of the ball. Overall, expect the Bobcats to return to the playoffs and make a run toward a state title this season.
Prediction
Buchholz will win at least 10 games and reach a regional final.
