Key Losses
The Crusaders have some big shoes to fill this year, starting with four-star quarterback James Resar, who started the past three seasons and saw time as a freshman. Resar is now at Iowa, but he leaves behind quite the legacy as Bishop Kenny’s QB. He threw for 4,756 yards and 47 TDs and rushed for 1,502 yards and 21 TDs during his high school career with the Crusaders.
Linebacker Nash Beenen, who is headed to play for Navy, had 122 career tackles and three sacks for the Crusaders.
Other key losses include offensive lineman Ethan Proffitt, who is now at Florida Atlantic University, and linebacker Kolbe Sexton, now at Benedictine College.
Running back Julian Dewes will also not return.
Who’s Back
Head coach Tim Krause said the key returners for 2024 include three seniors, a junior, and a sophomore.
The seniors returning are wide receiver JP Donovan and defensive backs AJ Alicea and Garrett Holloway. Donovan has 57 receptions for 1,015 yards receiving with seven touchdowns over the past two seasons.
Junior linebacker Gunnar Rogers will be back.
One of the young guys to watch on offense is sophomore running back Caleb Mattison, who enjoyed a standout freshman season in 2023. His debut with the Bishop Kenny offense featured 138 carries for 814 yards and seven touchdowns last year.
What to Expect
Krause said he is excited about this year’s team, and he has good reason to be. Even with the loss of several big-time players, the Crusaders still return a ton of guys who played meaningful minutes last year.
“I’m really excited about the group we have returning that played a lot of snaps last year, along with a very talented rising junior class,” Krause said. “We have made the playoffs the last three seasons and are hoping to continue that streak this year and then advance once we make the playoffs.”
