Alabama Male Athlete of the Month: Red Level Basketball Player Javen Poindexter

One of the state’s top scorers so far this season, Red Level basketball player Javen Poindexter has been voted the ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month for January 2024. For his on-court play in December 2023, Poindexter received an overwhelming 79.23% of the possible votes over three additional finalists covering two different sports: Montgomery Catholic football’s Caleb McCreary, Gulf Shores football’s Ronnie Royal, and Montgomery Academy basketball’s Skyler Stovall.

This is the second time Poindexter has received the honor during his Red Level basketball career – he was previously named the ITG Next Alabama Male Athlete of the Month in February 2023. As for last month, Poindexter helped lead Red Level to a 4-4 record, ranking among Alabama’s scoring leaders while doing so.

In eight games, Poindexter averaged an impressive 31.3 PPG, along with 8.5 RPG, 5 APG, and 3.6 SPG. He had at least 30 points in all but two of those contests. Poindexter’s December output included three double-doubles, which came in a pair of wins over Opp and a victory over Florala. His respective point totals in those contests were 36, 39, and 28, with rebounds at 16, 12, and 13, respectively.

For the 2023-24 season to date, Poindexter has helped lead the Tigers to a 9-6 record in Class 1A, positioning them for a likely return to the playoffs in the coming weeks.

Ranking among the state’s top scorers, Poindexter is averaging 34.8 PPG through 12 games. He has nine games of 30+ points scored, three of 40+, and even one 51-point performance in a 64-53 win over Pleasant Home on January 5. Poindexter is also averaging 8.8 RPG, 4.8 APG, and 3.3 SPG, and he is shooting 45% during that 12-game span.

Congratulations to Red Level basketball player Javen Poindexter, the ITG Next Alabama January 2024 Male Athlete of the Month.
