Baker Claims Top Spot to Open the Season
With the start of the 2022-23 Alabama high school boys basketball season drawing near, we present our power rankings for Classes 4A-7A. (Note: These rankings will be updated throughout the 2022-23 season. Classes 1A-3A will be released next week.)
1 – Baker (7A)
While there are a few different teams to choose from here, the No. 1 ranking entering the 2022-23 Alabama high school basketball season goes to the Baker Hornets, who are coming off a 31-4 season and a Class 7A state semifinal appearance. Headlining the Hornets’ 2022-23 roster is one of the state’s top players, junior guard Labaron Philon. Josh Flowers and Charles Taylor are also back for a team that was consistently one of Alabama high school basketball’s best a year ago.
2 – Cullman (6A)
Defending 6A state champion Cullman enters the 2022-23 Alabama high school basketball season looking to go back-to-back. The Bearcats, who finished with a 29-3 overall record a year ago, will have to replace a few key names, including Tucker Gambrill, but they should be talented once again up-and-down the roster. One returnee to watch is senior forward Tucker Cagle.
3 – Vestavia Hills (7A)
One of the state’s best a year ago at 26-5 overall, Vestavia Hills is likely to be one of the top teams in Class 7A again this season, even after falling in the first round of the playoffs a year ago. A big reason for this No. 3 ranking is the return of Win Miller, a senior guard who should be one of the state’s top players in 2022-23.
4 – Enterprise (7A)
The defending Class 7A state champions, the Enterprise Wildcats are coming off an impressive 24-6 season in which they were led by one of the state’s top players, forward Elijah Terry. They’ll have to replace Terry and a few other this season, but they also return Keion Dunlap, Trevon Kemmerlin, and Jordan Hines, who all could play key roles in the effort to repeat.
5 – Mountain Brook (6A)
Rounding out the top 5 is Class 6A’s Mountain Brook, with the Spartans looking to return to the final four after a 30-5 season that ended with a defeat in the regional finals. The Spartans will have a talented roster led by one of Class 6A’s top guards, junior Ty Davis.
6 – James Clemens (7A)
7 – Huffman (6A)
8 – Lee-Huntsville (5A)
9 – Spain Park (7A)
10 – Jacksonville (4A)
Defending Class 5A state champion Lee-Huntsville again begins the 2022-23 season within the Top 10, as does defending 4A state champion Jacksonville, which returns one of the state’s top frontcourt players in senior John Broom.
James Clemens and Huffman are both coming off impressive seasons as well, with both the 7A Jets and 6A Vikings tasked with replacing multiple key names from their state runner-up teams from a year ago. Spain Park is the fifth Class 7A team to be ranked within the Top 10 entering the season. The Jaguars went 28-8 a year ago to reach the state semifinals.
11 – Ramsay (5A)
12 – McGill-Toolen (6A)
13 – Eufaula (6A)
14 – Park Crossing (6A)
15 – Escambia County (4A)
Ramsay, the 2021-22 Class 5A runner up, begins the year ranked just outside the Top 10 at No. 11 overall. They’re led by one of the classification’s top returning players, senior forward Kerrington Kiel. Escambia County, the 2021-22 Class 4A runner up, also begins the season ranked highly, as the Blue Devils come in at No. 15 after a 26-5 season.
As for the No. 12-14 spots, Class 6A is well represented by McGill-Toolen, Eufaula, and Park Crossing. The Yellowjackets and Thunderbirds both reached the state semifinals a year ago, while Eufaula finished with a 31-4 record and reached the regional finals.
16 – Scottsboro (6A)
17 – Grissom (7A)
18 – Spanish Fort (6A)
19 – Smiths Station (7A)
20 – UMS-Wright (5A)
Led by senior guard Tyson Sexton, Class 6A’s Scottsboro begins the year ranked at No. 16 after a regional final appearance last season. Class 7A’s Grissom Tigers, at No. 17, are led by one of the state’s top returning guards, senior RJ Johnson.
Another Class 7A team, Smiths Station, begins the 2022-23 Alabama high school basketball season ranked at No. 19, while UMS-Wright comes in at No. 20. The Panthers reached the 7A regional finals a year ago, while UMS-Wright returns one of 5A’s top players in senior guard Bridges Simmons.
21 – Pinson Valley (6A)
22 – Westminster Christian (4A)
23 – Sparkman (7A)

Class 7A is represented in the No. 23-25 spots by Sparkman, Huntsville and Hoover. Ja’Mari Arnold and Salim London are standouts who return for the Panthers and Buccaneers, respectively.
